Where is it? What is it?

The Soviet encyclopaedic dictionary is short and is point, as the military charter.

1) Corfu is the italian name of a Greek island Kerkyra.

2)  Kerkyra (with an accent on the first syllable) is the island in Ionic group of islands. Territory of Greece. 592 sq. kms. Height up to 906 meters. Agyculture industry, winter resorts. Main city is Kerkyra.

Kerkyra is the most northern from Greek Ionic islands prolated by a line-up along western coast of Greece. Only 7 islands are large, and, maybe, 777another. One time the islands were the independent state, named as " Republic of Seven Islands ", and Kerkyra was the capital. The part of Corfu Island bounds with Albania.

Kerkyra is most green from Ionic islands with the most developed tourist industry. Stable perfect summer weather without great heat, the warm sea, hospitable people for a long time have made Corfu as a popular place of rest of the Europeans, in particular - Britains, Germans and Italians. Per the last years among the tourists all is more appreciable presence of the Hungarians, Checks and Russians. The Americans look also. Very many know about Kerkyra from the Darrell's stories, had read in childhood, and consequently romantic concern to an island, which, however, not only deceives, and strengthens these impressions.

Corfu is long, abour 60 kms 60, and narrow (about 30 kms in the most broad part) island on a distance in some kilometers from continental Greece. In north a distance from Albania is only 2 kms. In northern and central parts the island are covered with low green mountains. The highest mountain Pantokrator (only 906 meters) is located in the northeast part of the island. The unique large city is the capital Kerkyra which is located on east coast of the island. All the rest are borows, not the cities. The airport is practically in the city outscirs. It is possible to reach all peripheral borows by regular buses or by a taxi, of course, however it is necessary to know, that the last buses depart rather early,  about  nine hours in the evenings.

Those who was on continental Greece, speak, that Corfu is perfectly not similar to Greece: there are neither dust, nor naked rocks, exhausting heat. I am not sure, but ait seems for me that tha matter is in olive trees almost entirely covering the island. Under an olive tree there is a very good microclimate becouse shadow is almost continuous, but completely transparent. On the open sun it is just hot, but under an olive tree it is simply warm and calm.
